Robert Price vs. David Marshall

Retopping this message after the live debate.

Popular author and Christian apologist David Marshall (whose interview with the Cadre on the topic of the New Atheism can be found here) discussed Jesus Myth theories with popular author and anti-Christian apologist Dr. Robert Price, on the Infidel Guy radio webcast, Thursday night, March 27, 2008. David's a pleasant and entertaining speaker, and Dr. Price is, well, colorful to say the least. {g} How substantial either side was in a limited radio discussion, eh, hard to say. But radio shows are more for entertaining snapshots of positions, as an introduction to authors' opinions on topics (typically meaning "go buy the book" {g}); and that was apparently accomplished with elan.

There doesn't seem to be a link up yet; but that might be a few days. When-if-ever the podcast is put up for free (Gold, i.e. paying, members have faster access to all archived shows), it'll most likely be found here.

I listened to this, and I'm starting to think that these radio shows just aren't good avenues for these kinds of discussions. I've listened to others, and people just don't present stuff well. With no disrespect to Marshall, I really didn't feel like he defended things well at all. He seemed to shirk a lot of important questions in my opinion. That's not to say I think Price did well either. Price has even admitted he's odd in this area, and after reading his article on 1 Cor. 15, I have to completely agree. He certainly didn't make any compelling arguments on the show either. He basically just seems to say "that's hard to believe, so I decided not to believe it."

All the same, thanks for letting everyone know it was coming. :)

FYI, I critiqued R. Price's argument about 1 Cor. 15 as an interpolation, here:

Prior to authoring that article, R. Price and I debated the issue via email, as you can read here:

As it happens I've actually read your critique of his argument, and I thought it was a great response. In fact, some of the sources you cited actually helped me out in a paper I wrote for my Master's work (the stuff on Marcion in particular if I remember correctly). My emphasis in my Master's internship study was in 1st and 2nd Corinthians, and I thought it absolutely wild that Price suggested such a thing, especially after blatantly admitting it lacked the manuscript support. But I suppose those Jesus Seminar folks have to do something to ignore 1 Cor. 15, right? :-/ Anyway, I'll definitely enjoy reading your email debate. Thanks! :)

It's hard for any side to do a good job without carefully moderated structure, yep. But they can be entertaining as snapshots; and they sell books. {g}

Heh... I'll agree, it is entertaining and it definitely helps book sales. Although, I should add that I thought it more entertaining to watch the chat at the bottom of the video feed where I saw at least 15 different atheists all preaching to each other about how wrong and stupid Marshall was. There's little as entertaining as an internet room full of irate people colorfully agreeing with each other.

Well, that occasionally applies to us, too. {g}

Haha... good point. Well, hopefully without the colorful language. :)
