Andrea Clark Will Live

In a previous post, Nomad informed us of the plight of Andrea Clark. Ms. Clark, though wanting to live, was going to be killed by her hospital. The "ethics" committee at St. Luke had voted to stop all life-sustaining medical treatment.

It appears they have reversed themselves. Ms. Clark will be given the medical treatment she needs.

Her case exemplifies what may be a troubling new trend in bioethics called "futile care theory." This theory, which has the force of law in Texas apparently, would allow doctors to refuse life-sustaining treatment to a patient who desires and can afford it. For more information about this movement in the medical field, please read the original article cited by Nomad.

Knowing Texas as I do, I suspect that the most probable way of reversing this law is public referendum.
