NRO Takes Kerry To Task on Abortion Comments

I wasn't the only one impressed by Kerry's statements about abortion. Over on National Review Online, John J. Pitney made the following comment in a short piece:

Why would he take no legal steps to curb abortion? "I can't take what is an article of faith for me and legislate it for someone who doesn't share that article of faith." That rationalization does not hold up. In July, he said that he believes "life does begin at conception." If he takes that statement seriously, then he has to believe that it applies to all human life, not just to the babies of his coreligionists.

The more he talked about the issue, the less sense he made. He claimed that "you don't deny a poor person the right to be able to have whatever the constitution affords them if they can't afford it otherwise." So it follows that if the Constitution protects the right to keep and bear arms, the government must help poor people buy weapons. I do look forward to his Gun Stamps proposal.

The latter comment appears aimed at justifying his support for government funding of abortion. And Pitney's comparison to the gun issue is on point. But there are more analogies. I have freedom of speech, but cannot afford to publish my thoughts in a full page ad in the New York Times like others can. Can I get a New York Times Advertising Stamps allotment? I also have the right to practice my religion. Is the government obligated to help me fill that offering plate? I also have the right to have children, does that mean the government will pay for me to have all the children I want? Okay. That one might be a bad example. Anyway, you get the point.
